Wesley girls and boys win the Victorian Interschool Gymnastics titles
Posted 11 November 2011
Wesley College’s gymnastics team achieved outstanding results at the Victorian Interschool Gymnastics competition held over three days in September at the Donvale Sports Complex.
Wesley’s boys’ squad consisted of 18 boys from Years 7 – 12, who competed in five different divisions. 30 Wesley girls, ranging from Years 7 – 12, also competed over five divisions.
Clare Whittam, Head Coach of Gymnastics and a former Wesley student, reported that, after a hard season of training, the Wesley students achieved remarkable results. She said that for the senior members of the gymnastics squad who are in Year 12, up to nine hours’ worth of training a week to prepare for the competition, on top of their Year 12 studies, is a huge commitment.
Overall, the Wesley boys were placed first out of 11 schools, and the girls were placed second out of 29 schools.
Stand out performances from Wesley’s two teams came from the two gymnastics captains. Nick Silagy (Glen Waverley campus Year 12 student) was placed first in the boys Division A section, and Freya Wildash (St Kilda Road campus Year 12 student) also came first in the A2 Division for girls.
In 2010, the Wesley boys squad won the Overall Victorian State Gymnastics Championships for the first time in the history of the College. The fantastic 2011 results are a wonderful affirmation that the gymnastics program has brilliantly achieved ongoing success. The College is very proud of each member of the gymnastics teams and congratulates them on their wonderful achievements.
