Two Wesley students drafted into the AFL
Posted 24 November 2011
Wesley College is delighted to congratulate two of our Year 12 Glen Waverley campus students, Tom Curran (pictured below) and Toby Greene (pictured above), on their selection in the 2011 AFL National Draft, into the North Melbourne and the new Greater Western Sydney sides respectively. This is the first time that two Wesley students have been drafted in the same year and follows the outstanding success of the College’s First XVlll in 2010, when they won the Associated Public School’s Football Premiership.
Tom and Toby are both members of the First XVIII under the direction of Wesley’s Head Coach of Football, and also Tom’s father and former Hawthorn player, Peter Curran.
Outside school, both boys play for the Oakleigh Chargers, with Toby living in Ashburton and Tom in Glen Waverley. Tom was given a “step-up” in his footballing career this year when presented with the opportunity to fill in for the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) / Australian Football League (AFL) academy team this year.
Peter Hawkins, Head of Sport at Wesley, says "Both boys have been great role models to other students, not only in football terms, but have both gone about improving their skills in a most diligent manner.
Peter Curran says “Toby’s attention to detail has enabled him to rocket past many hundreds of talented young men and achieve a spot on the inaugural senior list of Greater Western Sydney. Tom too has blossomed physically since his arrival at Wesley in Year 9. This has seen him able to compete at a progressively higher level.”
Wesley College wishes both Tom and Toby the best of luck as they line up for the 2012 AFL season.
