ATOM Award finalists
Posted 14 October 2011
Two current and one former Wesley College students have been selected as finalists for the 2011 Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) Awards (judged by teachers and industry professionals), which recognise and celebrate the excellence displayed by Australian and New Zealand productions for the screen.
5 Years Time by Beth Wilson (OW2010), Possible Love by Alchemy Oliver and Carousel by Caitlin Symon have all been nominated for Best Senior Secondary Music Video. The winners will be announced at the 2011 ATOM Awards Night, to be held at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Friday 21 October 2011.
Possible Love 5 Years Time Carousel
Beth Wilson (OW2010) completed her film 5 Years Time as part of her Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Media course. Her work was a reflection of her feelings about relationships, and her response to the large number of sad and depressing music videos that exist in today's media. Beth wanted to create a music video full of hope, nostalgia, and dreams of the future.
Caitlin Symon completed her film Carousel as part of her VCE Media course. Caitlin was interested in exploring how today’s teenagers are in such a rush to grow up, and wanted to reflect this by seeing the life of one girl, in three different stages of her childhood.
Alchemy Oliver also completed her film Possible Love as part of her VCE Media course. Inspired by the indie art scene, and a fascination with the beauty of nature, her music video follows a girl's journey through the city as she explores the hidden beauty within it.
Both Caitlin and Alchemy's films include original music created and recorded by Wesley students, Syd Zygier (Carousel) and Isabella Baring (Possible Love).
Media is offered in Years 10, 11 and 12 at Wesley and the strength of the program and the success of the current students of the school is the result of the work of long-time Wesley staff member, Karen Koch, who was recognised by ATOM in 2007, when she received the Teacher of the Year award.
Wesley College is extremely proud of the outstanding achievements of theses students and wishes them the very best for the forthcoming awards night.
Media has a strong presence at Wesley College, with our own screening, Wesley on Screen at ACMI Cinemas at Federation Square, selling out every year. For more information and bookings on the upcoming Wesley on Screen, on Monday 17 October 2011, please click here.
