Citizen of the year in Clunes

Posted 23 September 2011

Doug Garth

Each year awards are made to citizens who have contributed to the Clunes community and the public are invited to nominate their Citizen of the Year. At a recent ceremony in Clunes, Doug Garth was recognised as 2011 Male Citizen of the Year for his valuable contributions to the Clunes Football and Netball Club and the broader Clunes community including the Wesley at Clunes program.

Doug's role as a guest speaker supports a core part of the Wesley at Clunes curriculum that encourages students to explore the questions of Who am I? Where have I come from? Where am I going? As part of this exploration, Doug Garth talks with the boys about resilience and the ability to deal with and overcome diversity. He talks of challenges that he has faced physically, socially and emotionally and does so, in a frank and direct manner whilst sharing some of his life story, as a point of reference and comparison.

He also talks to the boys about the factors that have allowed him to overcome adversity in his life and about the way in which we all assume different personas, depending on who we are with, at the time.

As a President of the Clunes Football and Netball Club, Doug also works closely with the Wesley students who train and play with the Under 15 football team, whilst they are resident in Clunes.

Wesley College congratulates Garth for this wonderful achievement.
