A farewell from the Glen Waverley Captains

28 October 2010

As our final year at Wesley comes to an end, it seems like an appropriate time to not only reflect on the journey, but also the path that stretches out before us. After what has been a thirteen year journey for some and a one or two year period for others, everyone has their own share of memories, successes, challenges and friendships.

From the side-splitting laughs and fun-loving friendships, to the embarrassing moments and stressful challenges, our years at Wesley have provided us with a great collection of memories.

Whether it be the debates, concerts, drama productions, art shows, sporting endeavours or simple joys like laughing with friends at lunchtime, our time in purple has not just been an enjoyable journey, but has also helped to shape our characters. We have been prepared by an education not purely based on the academic but, more importantly, on developing our individuality, nurturing our talents and encouraging our passions; all of which have given us the opportunity to start discovering who we really are, and what our place is in the world.

It is difficult to know what we want to do with our lives if we do not know who we are and what we are good at; our schooling years have given us a vehicle for self-discovery so that we might start to answer these bigger questions. Although school is only the beginning of our pursuit of self-understanding, it has given us the fundamental tools that we need to start building our futures. At the same time, as we ponder what lies ahead, it also is important to remember the words of the Ancient Roman poet Horace, who said "Enjoy the day; live life to the fullest; and make the most of what you have."

Although the future may seem daunting at times, there is also excitement in not knowing what lies ahead. After spending thirteen years in what is essentially the same daily routine, it is exciting to enter a new world whereby we are given more liberties and an increasing opportunity to discover ourselves and engage with the world. We become more exposed, but we also become more empowered.

So what will you do as you leave the familiar Wesley environment and enter the wider world? The groundwork has been established for us to aspire to achieve the impossible, to break boundaries and step outside our comfort zone. We have been given the capabilities and the responsibility to assist others as well as ourselves in leading a life of happiness and fulfilment.

To the Class of 2010, we thank you for the spirit and inspiration you showed every day, the happy memories we have shared over the journey and the supportive friendships that will stay with us forever. We wish you every success for your future endeavours and every happiness in what we hope will be an enjoyable and rewarding future for all.
