General Information for International Students

Wesley College prides itself on being a school with a caring environment, a factor which is particularly important for international students, where there is no immediate family support system. The school has clear guidelines in relation to the selection and care of international students, thus ensuring their happiness and success while at the College.

  • Accommodation

Wesley College requires that international students either live with a relative or in a homestay with a family, receiving full board with their own room and all meals supplied.

  • Primary Carer

Wesley College requires that each overseas student, irrespective of age, has a Primary Carer appointed by the student's parents to act on their behalf during the student's time at the school.

The Primary Carer should be a mature adult who is a resident of Melbourne and willing to accept responsibility for all aspects of the student's welfare whilst the student is enrolled at Wesley College.

The school would expect a Primary Carer to act as necessary in such matters as discipline, attendance, academic progress and accommodation arrangements for the student, and to exercise an overview of the student's activities out of normal school hours, to ensure that the student's welfare and interests are protected. It is also expected that Primary Carer will attend all Parent/Teacher interviews.

In many cases the parent will appoint a Primary Carer, but Wesley College may be required to appoint a Primary Carer for the student. The Primary Carer must be deemed to be a suitable choice by Wesley College.

Parents should note that the school must be informed in writing of any change in Primary Carership arrangements.
Where:
(1) A parent/Primary Carer holds a Student/Guardian visa; and (2) Where the Student/Guardian visa holder is a Primary Carer of a student visa holder who is under 18 years of age (or other exceptional circumstances such as disability or cultural requirements); and (3) Where such a Student/Guardian visa holder, who is required to remain in Australia with the student in order to ensure the student's welfare arrangements, wishes to leave Australia;

the parent/Primary Carer must receive DIAC (Department of Immigration and Citizenship) approval and demonstrate compassionate and/or compelling reasons for travel.

  • Visas

To study in Australia a visa must be obtained from an Australian Embassy or High Commission.

The College's letter awarding a place, together with the eCOE and eCAW is a prerequisite to an application for a visa.

After commencement at Wesley College, assistance by the school can be given for subsequent renewals of study visas. Students need to contact the International Student Coordinator for assistance.

  • Health Insurance - International Student Health Cover

The Australian Government requires all full fee paying international students to take out health insurance. The College arranges cover for each calendar year of the student's attendance and charges this fee to the student's account.

  • Use of Personal Information

The information provided by the student to the College may be made available to Commonwealth and State agencies and the Fund Manager of the ESOS Assurance Fund, pursuant to obligations under the ESOS Act 2000 and the National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students.

The College is required, under s19 of the ESOS Act 2000, to tell the Department of Immigration about:

  1. Certain changes to the student's enrolment and
  2. Any breach by the student of a student visa condition relating to attendance satisfactory academic performance.

International Student Grievances Policy

(as required by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship)

  • Policy

The College will seek to provide appropriate care for all international students attending the College.

A number of people take responsibility for caring for international students and act as required.

Head of School/Head of Campus Student grievances are handled by the School Counsellors, Head of School and final responsibility for resolution of any student grievance rests with the Head of Campus
