A superb meet at the APS Athletics Championships saw the Wesley Girls Athletics Team clinch the Premiership while the Wesley Boys Athletics Team claimed fourth place, a mere two points off third.

Wesley Girls Athletics Team had to wait to be confirmed APS Premiers for 2018, but the wait was worthwhile. The victory was the Girls Athletics seventh consecutive victory.

The battle for the Premiership was closely contested with Haileybury all day and we recognise their tremendous performance.

The commitment and effort of all our girl athletes was matched by the hard work and expertise of our coaches, led once again by Head Coach Tim O’Shaughnessy.

The consistency in results across all age groups and events is a major reason for the team’s success, as well as the ability of several of our athletes to compete in multiple events. We won 20 of the 73 events.

Wesley athletics Sophie

Sophie O'Sullivan

On an individual level Sophie O’Sullivan set a new APS record in the Girls U17 800 metres winning a great race against Caulfield’s Gigi Maccagnini in 2.13.44. Sophie also won the Girls U17 High Jump and the 400 metres.

Our other multiple winner of events was Leia Varley in the Under 20 Discus with a 40.47 metre throw, over 13 metres clear of the next competitor, and the Under 20 Shot Put. Rosie Nash won the Under 16 100 metres and shared gold with her team members in the Under 16 100 Relay.

Wesley Boys Athletics Team gave a great performance all day to finish in fourth position, just two points behind Haileybury in third.

Like our Girls Team, the Boys team showed a consistency in performance across multiple events and combined the same commitment and hard work to their training and competition across the whole season, culminating in the APS Final last Saturday.

Wesley athletics Melvin

Melvin Monleh

Melvin Monleh broke the APS record for the Under 17 100 metres in the Heats on Wednesday in 10.67, smashing the previous record by a massive 0.25 seconds, and followed up with a victory in the same event in the APS Finals on Saturday in 10.92. Melvin also won the 200 metres and Long Jump in the APS Finals.

The boys showed their superiority in the 800 metres with four victories, by Adam Spencer in the Under 20s, William Mossop in the Under 15s, Wolfgang Cotra-Nemesi in the Under 14s and the Boys Under 20 team in the 800 Relay.
