The Wesley community congratulates alumnus Professor Graham Farquhar AO (OW1964), who received the award of Senior Australian of the Year. The award recognises Professor Farquhar’s groundbreaking work on protecting food security in a changing climate.

Professor Farquhar, one of Australia’s most eminent scientists, is a Professor of Environmental Biology at the Research School of Biological Sciences, Australian National University, and is recognised internationally.

He is a world leader in researching and modelling the interactions between plants and their environment. Earlier this year he was also the first Australian to win the 2017 Kyoto prize. As a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Professor Farquhar shared the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize with other IPCC scientists.

He is quoted in the ABC saying, ‘My generation of seniors is probably the luckiest one ever, we can, on average, live longer and more healthily and thereby contribute more.’
