SEUSSICAL, the Musical
Music by Stephen Flaherty
Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens
Book by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty
Based on the stories by Dr Seuss

Musicals often attract hyperbole, and for Seussical, this year’s Middle School musical, “fantastical” and “magical” seem right on the mark. Based on the wonderful stories by Dr Seuss, beloved by generations of wide-eyed children who listened to them, and equally by the adults who read them aloud, this show takes us to imaginative landscapes rarely visited. Whoever would have thought the theatre could make visible the tiny world of the Who, inhabitants of a mere speck of dust? But the show musically affirms that “you are never too small to be noticed.”

And what a delightful journey it is, to visit the precincts of that tiny world through a host of great songs, and to meet all the characters who either inhabit it, keep watch over it, or who simply don’t notice it at all. Welcome to the inter-connected worlds of Horton the Elephant, hefty guardian of the tiny, the legendary Cat in the Hat, our narrator and guide, along with Gertrude McFuzz, with her preposterous one-feather tail, Mayzie la Bird, who can’t even keep an eye on her egg, the sour Kangaroo, and the other inhabitants of the Jungles of Nool (all remarkably tuneful).

This enchanting experience is set up for us by little Jo-Jo, the boy mentored by the Cat, and who gets into trouble for having too much imagination – for thinking his “thinks”. So with Jo-Jo’s imagination in control, let’s join up for the ride. It’s a joyously crazy musical bunch to spend a couple of hours with, and at the same time touch base with eternal ideas about friendship, loyalty, family and community.
